Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Couzin studied painting at the University of Michigan. In 1977, after receiving her MFA in film from the Art Institute of Chicago, she won the Golden Athena Award for Best Experimental Film at the Athens (Ohio) International Film Festival for her film A Trojan House.
