GRADUATE Program
MFA Degree Program
The graduate department curriculum covers a wide range of critical and technical issues. Working closely with the graduate adviser of their choice, students are encouraged to create a course of study informed by their own goals for their work as artists. Considerable weight is given to a student's establishing a theoretical and historical context for understanding their work, the work of other artists, and the work of media in general.

The faculty represent a broad range of experimental media traditions and practices. These range from animation and handmade films, to innovative documentary and narrative investigations, multimedia and web works, to community-based and activist projects. A rotating schedule of internationally known artists complements the Department’s curriculum. In the past, the department has hosted Mani Kaul, Craig Baldwin, James Benning, Ernie Gehr, Harun Farocki, Mona Hatoum, Isaac Julien, Trinh T. Minh-ha, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Cheryl Dunye, Peggy Ahwesh, Ulrike Ottinger, Martha Rosler, and Yvonne Rainer. In 2004, internationally recognized filmmaker Anne Quirynen was the department artist-in-residence. Visiting artists residencies are designed to give students extended periods of time to work with master artists on advanced research projects.

Among the important resources that students in film, video, and new media have access to at the School are the Video Data Bank and the Gene Siskel Film Center. The Video Data Bank's collection is one of the world's most important archives of independent video work. The Gene Siskel Film Center is one of the nation's finest screening venues, showcasing the diversity of international cinema.

Equipment and facilities include: Arriflex, Éclair, CP, and Bolex 16mm motion picture cameras and accessories; Sony Betacam SP, Panasonic, and Canon DV video cameras; Nagra, Sony, and Tascam analog and digital audio recorders; various portable lighting kits; quality Sennheiser, AT, and Sony microphones; AVID, Media 100, and Final Cut Pro digital nonlinear editing systems; Steenbeck flatbed editing machines; JK and Oxberry optical printers; Oxberry animation stand; two shooting studios; Pro Tools digital audio mixing suite; 16mm film sound transfer and mixing facility; shared work space; and 70-seat screening theater.
