ABOUT [FRAY]

[FRAY] is a series of interwoven events organized by the Film, Video and New Media department (FVNM) at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). [FRAY] is focussed on time, screen and code based experimental New Media art. [FRAY] consists of the following interrelated aspects: a conference, discussions and presentations, screenings and clusters of projects running during the Spring 2006 semester.

The Conversations At The Edge held at the Gene Siskel Film Center will host 3 evenings of FRAY events including a presentation by Shuddhabrata Sengupta on his work with Raqs Media Collective and Sarai New Media Lab including MEDIA CITY, PUBLICS AND PRACTICES IN THE HISTORY OF THE PRESENT, and GARAGE, among others; Dan Sandin screening and discussing rare tapes from his earliest days with video and examples of his most recent work and "Calculations" a screenings program of early animation films made with computational systems. "Calculations" is a cross-section of films by these early pioneers including John Whitney's CATALOG (1961, 7 min.), Lillian Schwartz's ENIGMA (1972, 4 min.), John Stehura's CYBERNETIK 5.3 (1965-69, 8 min.), Peter Foldes' HUNGER (1973, 12 min.) and other works by Charles Csuri, Ed Emshwiller, Larry Cuba and Stan VanDerBeek. [ FRAY] will involve screenings at The Eye & Ear Clinic as well as other student organized events during the semester. Scott Bartlett's OFF/ON as well as other media works related to [FRAY] will screen at The Eye & Ear Clinic held in room 1307, 112 S. Michigan Ave., at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.




NEW MEDIA IN MEXICO CITY

2006.04.05 [FRAY] New Media in Mexico City panel discussion

New Media in Mexico City, a panel discussion with Mexico City (MXC) based curators and organizers Eusebio Bañuelos (Video artist and Moving Image curator at The CENTRO MULTIMEDIA) and Arcángel Constantini (Net Art, Web Art and New Media curator, organizer and artist). Join us to hear from and engage in conversation with hese accomplished and active young curators and learn about the dynamic and very different ways in which New Media manifests in Mexico City!

[FRAY] CONFERENCE

2006.05.13 [FRAY] panel discussions and presentations

[FRAY] culminates in a free conference event on Saturday May 13 on the campus of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The conference aspect of [FRAY] will engage New Media artists and theorypractitioners in dynamic panel discussions and presentations. These panel discussion sessions will highlight the activity of New Media artists and theorypractitioners from Chicago as well as connecting to international efforts. Confirmed participants include (in alphabetical order) Annette Barbier (UNREAL-ESTATES and Interactive Arts and Media Department Columbia College), Ryan Griffis (The Temporary Travel Office, YOUgenics and The School of Art & Design University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana), Mark Hansen (Professor in English Language & Literature, Cinema & Media Studies; University of Chicago), Lynn Marie Kirby (California College of the Arts), PILOT TV, Rob Ray (DEADTECH and dorkbot Chicago), Lincoln Schatz (OPEN-NODE and The Upgrade! Chicago) and Daniel Tucker (AREA Chicago).

[FRAY] NEW MEDIA PROJECTS

2006.05.13 [FRAY] after (party) event

The Chicago Art Department will host an after (party) event following the conference aspect of [FRAY]. This event is co-presented by The Chicago Art Department, the Film, Video and New Media department and the Performance department at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. This event will include the exhibition, performance and remixing of realtime, web-based and experimental New Media projects. New Media projects available at the after (party) event will include projects developed by students of the OnEvent class in the Film, Video and New Media department.

[FRAY] AS A FRAMEWORK

ONGOING

The students of the OnEvent class in the Film, Video and New Media department are are collaboratively developing New Media projects that plug into, engage, extend and open [FRAY] as a framework for curatoring and organizing New Media events.
